Why mulch around trees ?

Thousands of young trees, planted with care, expense and enthusiasm, die each year from the lack of just a few minutes of TLC. So time, money and effort are wasted.
Competition from other vegetation can severely restrict a young tree's growth. So any grass and weeds for a radius of at least half a metre around the tree should be flattened - taking care to avoid damage to the tree’s roots. Early in the year, when the soil is moist, the cleared area should be covered with a mulch mat which helps retain moisture near the roots, reduces competition from weeds, and means there is no need to use grass-cutting machinery near the tree where it might damage the bark.
Mulching around trees is very important because it helps the young tree to obtain essential nutrients needed to survive early growth. Mulching helps to suppress weeds round the root system - the main reason why young trees often do not survive rather than from wind or animal pests.
During the first three years of growth moisture is needed in the soil which carries minerals to its root system - the weeds would take much of this moisture away so reducing the tree's growth rate. The weed suppressant will further help to prevent the soil drying out and cracking. The mulch or weed mat should spread out from the tree at least 0.5m from the stem so that the root system can quickly become established. Mulching mats laso have none of the associated risks of using chemicals.

GreenwayDirect supplies the following mulch mats :-
Black Uvi Polythene Mat
The most economical - preventing weed growth for at least two years.
Woven Polypropylene Mats
These not only stop weeds but being light proof and allowing water through provide essential elements for the young tree's successful growth
Biodegradable, Environmentally Friendly Mats
Made from 100% wool carpets which would otherwise have gone to landfill, these are the most effective material for use as a weed suppressant. These weed mats hold moisture well and prevent the surrounding soil from drying out, whilst being biodgradable they release nitrogen - one of the essential nutrients needed by the young tree. |
