Tree Spirals
The best way to protect young trees from damage by rabbits, hares, sheep and deer as well as providing a micro climate to promote vigorous growth.
Staking is not required but a cane inside the tree spiral will allow slight movement to stimulate strong root development and stem strength.
Ventilated tree spirals provide the best environment for growth and disease free conditions but hole free spirals are available where spraying may be necessary (see also weed suppression mats below).
DURABILITY
These tree spirals are manufactured from recycled PVC with added UV stabilisers and colourants. It is expected that they will provide at least 4 years protection where UV levels are average. An open, south facing slope may reduce this period to three years.
Where conditions are sheltered the life expectancy could be 7 years so it is recommended that an inspection is carried out when the trees are established to avoid growth restriction. In the case of Poplar trees it is recommended that they are inspected annually because of their rapid growth at lower temperatures.
SIZES
The spiral length should allow the young tree to protrude from the top of the spiral.
For convenient storage and handling spirals are supplied coiled into fives and boxed
Prices of spirals vary according to colour and length. Other colour variants are available on request.
We supply a range of height, diameter and colour (clear, green tint and brown)

Tree Ties
Buckle tree ties (C201) are quick and efficient. They stretch as the tree grows and can be adjusted as the tree diameter increases. Includes a collar between the tree and the stake to prevent chafing. They allow 300% stretch before breaking.

Weed Mats and accessories
Why are weed mats beneficial?
- they keep weeds from competing for nutrients and water
- they retain moisture
- they absorb heat for early season growth
- they reduce the risk of surface water erosion of disturbed soil
- they reduce the risk of damage by animals and disease
- Forestry Commission research shows that even the cheapest options increase survival chances and promote more rapid growth in young trees
What types of weed mat are there?
Black UVI Polythene
This is the most economical and will last about three seasons to give trees a really good start after which they are degraded by UV light to form small fragments. It is not permeable.
Recommended peg - copper coated steel mat staple (C719)
Woven Black Polypropylene
Much stronger, this material will last about five seasons before it is broken down by UV light. It is water permeable but still blocks 99.5% of light which will smother most weeds.
Recommended peg - polypropylene weed mat peg (C703)
Mats of all materials must be well anchored to avoid wind lifting which allows weeds to propagate. Pegs are efficient to use as they save having to dig corners in. At least one peg will be needed to seal the slot in the mat which can leave space for weeds to grow close to the stem. View our range here (C701-705)
